Precision taping techniques and custom bracing to support injured structures, facilitate correct movement patterns, and allow athletes to train and compete with confidence — during rehabilitation and beyond.
Sports taping is the strategic application of adhesive tape to joints and soft tissue structures to achieve specific clinical goals — mechanical support and restriction, pain reduction, proprioceptive facilitation, or oedema management. At Inflexion Health, we use two primary approaches, each selected based on the clinical goal:
Taping and bracing support a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions — from acute sprains to chronic instability and overuse conditions.
The clinician identifies the structure requiring support, the direction of instability or facilitation needed, and the primary clinical goal — mechanical restriction, proprioception, or fluid management.
Rigid tape, kinesiology tape, or a combination is selected based on your needs. Skin is prepared with pre-wrap or adhesive spray to ensure optimal adhesion and protect sensitive skin.
For rigid taping, anchors, stirrups, and lock-offs are applied in methodical layers. Kinesio tape is applied along specific fascial or muscular lines with calibrated tension to achieve the desired mechanical or neuromuscular effect.
You perform the provocative movement or sport-specific action to confirm the taping achieves symptomatic relief, corrects movement, and maintains adequate range of motion for your activity.
You are taught how to apply your own taping for training and competition at home, with written instructions and technique guidance provided for ongoing independence.
Rigid athletic tape applied for competition typically provides effective support for 2–3 hours of activity. Kinesiology tape is designed to last 3–5 days and can be worn during showering and light swimming. Longevity depends on skin preparation, activity level, and perspiration.
For many conditions in the early and mid stages of rehabilitation, taping provides equivalent or superior mechanical support to off-the-shelf bracing, with the added benefit of greater proprioceptive feedback. The long-term goal is always to develop active joint stability through strengthening so external support is no longer required.
Not at all. Kinesiology tape is effective across all activity levels and age groups. It is particularly useful for managing post-injury oedema (swelling), providing gentle postural cueing, and facilitating comfortable movement during early recovery — making it highly relevant for everyday patients and older adults.
With appropriate skin preparation and careful removal technique (pulling slowly parallel to the skin, not peeling upward), taping is safe for most skin types. Patients with very sensitive skin, adhesive allergies, or fragile skin should inform their clinician so alternative products and lower-irritant techniques can be used.
